Insurance 101 Part 4: Does Insurance Cover Spider Vein Treatment?

By: Alethea Maddox, Practice Manager of Vanishing Veins & Vivesse Med Spa

Veins 101 – Varicose veins are those big ropey veins on your leg that bulge above the skin.  Spider veins are the thin little thread like veins on your leg that lie below the surface.  Varicose veins – big and bulge.  Spider veins – little, thin and don’t bulge.

Varicose veins can be nasty things.  They can hurt, make your leg restless, swell your legs, lead to open sores on your leg and, in the worst of all complications, give rise to blood clots that can travel to your heart and lung.  Not good stuff.  Spider veins can look ugly (okay, really ugly) but complications – not so much.

So, here’s the rub. Varicose veins are considered a medical problem so, at least in theory, insurance can pay for it.  Spider veins are considered a cosmetic problem and insurance won’t pay for cosmetic treatments.  To them, it’s the same as if you tried to get coverage for a nose job or a boob job. No way.

And with that we’ve finished the discussion about insurance coverage for spider veins.  There is none.

Well, before we say that you should know that sometimes spider veins arise from underlying varicose veins.  So, if you have varicose veins for which medical treatment is needed then your spider veins may go away with treatment of the varicose veins.  It's always worth getting evaluated for this possibility.

What’s a girl to do?

Fortunately, at Vanishing Veins we have a number of alternatives.

  1. We offer an easy payment plan if you’re going to require three or more sessions (and most people do).  You can pay over three payments with a small flat finance fee of 5%.
  2. Care Credit is available through our office.  You can even be approved while you check out.  Care Credit is a credit card specifically designed for cosmetic medical treatments as well as for other health related expenses.  They offer a variety of promotional financing options, sometimes with 0% interest.  They also offer various payment plans that can extend as long as 60 months.
  3. Once or twice a year (on no specific schedule) we offer a special of four spider vein sessions for $999.  That’s one-third off.  We keep everyone informed of our specials throughout the year (and we have many) with our monthly newsletter.  If you are not on our email list click here and fill out the form.
  4. Lastly, our big open house is coming up on October 19, 2017.  We offer 30% off on all vein treatments, cosmetic medicine treatments, skin products and make-up.  Last time we ran an open house in April 150 people came.  It was a bit overwhelming.  So, this year we’re going to cap it at 100.  So, I suggest you sign up now if you’re thinking of it.  Later may be too late.  If you want to register click here or call 860-761-6666.

So that’s the bad (spider veins), the ugly (insurance companies won’t pay for them) and the good (Vanishing Veins makes it easy to afford the treatment you so badly need).
