Due to its minimal invasiveness and quick recover time, Closure technically referred to as Radiofrequency Ablation)is now the Gold standard for treating venous reflux or insufficiency. It has replaced vein stripping entirely.
Previously, doctors used invasive, violent procedures for varicose veins known as vein stripping, whereby, a diseased vein is literally stripped from the patient’s legs. This procedure was very painful and the patient couldn’t resume normal activity for weeks. Closure, however involves minimal pain, can be completed in 30 to 45 minutes and has you up on your feet immediately. This procedure is performed by Dr. Greenwald, done in the office with ultrasound guidance and local numbing medicine.
First, an ultrasound is used to locate and map the diseased vein. Once mapped, the skin is numbed and a small incision is made for the catheter. With the guidance of the ultrasound, the catheter is fed up the length of the vein that is leaky or broken.
Numbing medicine is injected around the vein, The catheter emits a small amount of radiofrequency energy, which heats the walls of the vein. As the vein walls heat up, the vein collapse and the entire vein becomes “sealed off, closed or complete ablation of the diseased vein”. The body automatically diverts blood flow to the healthy veins. The procedure takes away the painful throbbing and swelling over time.
