For those experiencing the discomfort of varicose veins, finding a treatment plan to help alleviate the condition sooner rather than later is important. When signs of varicose veins appear, scheduling an appointment with our specialist for treatment as soon as possible is the first step in avoiding potential medical complications. At Vanishing Veins in Hartford, our goal is to provide relief from the pain of varicose veins.
Varicose Vein Treatment – What to Know
__________
Veins – How They Work
Veins are vital and work around the clock. Each vein pumps blood through a valve that allows it to flow easily in one direction. When the valve is not operating at peak performance, it causes blood to flow in the opposite direction, resulting in pooling.
When pooling occurs, the veins become extended, which in turn causes more damage. The calves are the most common area for varicose veins, but your feet and ankles can also be affected.
Varicose veins are noticeable. Whereas spider veins can look more like a network of blood vessels under the skin, varicose veins are more predominant. Because the veins are being stretched due to the backup of pooling blood, the swollen veins extend the skin, creating a rope-like appearance.
Varicose veins do not heal by themselves. If left untreated, they will continue to be stressed, which can lead to additional concerns, such as chronic swelling, skin ulcers, skin discoloration, and more.
Who We Are
At our varicose vein treatment South Windsor location, Dr. Lori Greenwald, one of the country’s top surgeons specializing in vascular conditions, has focused on providing superior patient care for more than 20 years. With a consultation scheduled with Dr. Greenwald, a treatment plan can be recommended to get you back to feeling good and back on your feet.
What We Do
There are several options for varicose vein treatment in South Windsor. Our preferred treatment is radiofrequency ablation (RFA), also referred to as Closure. This minimally invasive procedure uses radiofrequency waves. RFA is considered a better option for varicose vein treatment than laser treatment. The procedure takes less than an hour to complete, with minimal pain and less bruising. Patients are up and around immediately after the procedure.
In the past, vein stripping was one of the standard procedures for treating varicose veins. The procedure was not only invasive but also painful, as the damaged vein was “stripped” out of the affected area. This resulted in the patient being unable to resume normal activities for several weeks.
The Closure Procedure
During the closure procedure at our office, Dr. Greenwald used ultrasound technology to identify the affected vein. Once located, the skin area was numbed so that a disposable catheter could be inserted into the damaged vein. Once the catheter was in place, an injection of numbing medicine was applied to the area around the vein.
The next step involves heating the vein walls due to radiofrequency energy emissions from the catheter to the veins. The applied heat causes the damaged vein to collapse and seal off. From this point, the body takes over and adjusts the blood flow so that it is directed to undamaged veins, which means the pain and swelling will, in time, become a thing of the past.
