Sclerotherapy is the main treatment option for spider veins. Occasionally, it is used for treating certain varicose veins. The technique involves injecting a diseased vein with a chemical called a sclerosant. This chemical causes the blood vessel to close up and eventually disappear. Sclerotherapy is performed in a short office visit and is often painless.
Using a very fine needle, the “sclerosing” chemical is injected into the diseased vein. In many cases the sclerosant can be more effectively administered using ultrasound guidance so as to visualize the vein. The chemical causes inflammation in the walls of the spider veins, causing them to swell shut and stick together. Each vein can require several injections and veins generally disappear in weeks to months. Results may continue to improve for up to one year. The vein shrivels and is eventually reabsorbed by the body. Sclerotherapy is usually painless, though you may experience a slight burning or tingling sensation. Most patients require multiple sessions in order to fully treat their spider veins.

Taking care of your body’s veins is essential, regardless of your age and lifestyle. At Vanishing Veins, we specialize in alleviating traditional varicose vein issues and provide a range of treatments for spider veins and venous insufficiency. One option to consider if you’re struggling with smaller varicose vein issues or spider veins in Suffield or Hartford includes sclerotherapy.
Sclerotherapy is a safe, effective, and long-lasting solution that’s non-surgical and performed in the office for those in need. Here’s how it works:
- A needle is used to inject a solution into the vein where needed.
- The solution helps the injected vein collapse (as intended) to be naturally reabsorbed by the body.
- Healthier veins will then have blood redirected to them, ultimately improving venous sufficiency.

Are There Any Side Effects of Sclerotherapy Treatment?
When visiting Vanishing Veins, we’ll review potential side effects you may encounter, whether you’re interested in Microphlebectomy treatment or learning about sclerotherapy for the first time. Some of the most common minor side effects you may experience with sclerotherapy include:
- Irritation: When undergoing sclerotherapy, you may feel irritation and/or redness at the direct injection site.
- Bruising: When receiving sclerotherapy treatments, bruising may occur in individuals with more sensitive skin.
- Hyperpigmentation: In some rare instances, patients may experience skin hyperpigmentation, which is usually only temporary. This condition typically fades over time without issue or risk to the body.
