What causes vein disease?

Studies suggest that 55% of women and 45% of men suffer from vein disease. Many wonder what causes vein disease and how to prevent it. Below are some of the main causes of vein disease.

Standing or sitting for long periods of time can be one of the causes of vein disease. Staying in the same position does not promote healthy blood flow, leading to vein disease in legs. To help prevent this, invest in a standing desk or make sure to find time to stand or go for a walk during the day.

Smoking or history of smoking weakens your veins, reducing blood flow. It’s best for your overall health to quit this habit.

Lack of exercise and rapid weight gain can also cause venous insufficiency as well as rapid weight gain. Living a sedentary lifestyle can lead to muscles not being able to pump blood successfully. To help prevent this, get moving!!! Make time to exercise at least three times a week.

Family history is another cause of vein disease.  If either one or both of your parents have had vein disease in their legs, your risk increases exponentially. To offset this, it’s important to focus on your general health and engage in physical and cardiovascular activity.

Gender also plays a role in vein disease, it’s a problem most women face as they age. Again, staying active and fit is the best way to relieve pressure in the lower body.

Wearing High Heels may look attractive, but they tend to hitch up the muscles of the calf and can add pressure to the veins on your legs. If you are at high risk for vein disease it’s important to wear shoes that are comfortable.

It can be hard to prevent vein disease but knowing what causes it can help prevent the severity of your symptoms. It’s important to keep an eye on your health and know your family’s history.
